Takeshi Akiyama

3rd Dan

My martial arts journey began during my teenage years, when I first trained in Kendo, laying the foundation for a lifelong passion for martial arts. In the 1990s, I expanded my skills further with traditional Okinawan karate, full-contact style karate, and Eagle Claw style kung fu while studying in New York, USA.

Returning to Japan in 1997, due to a heavy workload, I was unfortunately unable to continue training in martial arts. However, as soon as I moved to the UK in 2001, I resumed training, as the more relaxed lifestyle in the UK allowed me to have enough free time.

Initially, I began practicing various styles of Chinese kung fu and kickboxing, but soon my lifelong passion for karate led me back to it. I first trained in Wado-Ryu karate at a local dojo, but shortly after, I met T. Mitsuoka Sensei and found that Shotokan karate was my ideal style of martial arts. I therefore joined Sensei’s dojo in 2006. I have been practicing Shotokan karate ever since. My dedication led me to achieve 1st Dan in 2010, followed by 2nd Dan in 2012 and 3rd Dan in 2014, all under the WSKF.

Even though I have been dedicated to Shotokan karate for many years, whenever I have the opportunity, I always try to learn other martial arts such as Taiki Shisei Kenpo (Iquan) and Aikido, to further develop my understanding of budo.

I have been teaching Shotokan karate in Swindon under the guidance of T. Mitsuoka Sensei since 2009.
